Damask Rose Floral Water...

Favorite of the ancients, these roses have been known in cultivation since before Christ. They are rightly still popular for their unsurpassed fragrance and still commercially farmed for distillation of perfume essence. They have appeared in art from the time of the ancient Egyptians because of their lovely flower form. They are mainly soft and delicate in color and have massed spring display. Some varieties repeat in autumn.

The botanical genus name Rosa and its common English name “rose” can be traced back via Latin Rosa to Greek rhodon. The plant was known bronze-age Greece and is referenced in Homer’s “Odyssey”. The source of Greek rhodon is probably a lost tongue of Western Asia.  

Nobody knows exactly who bred the first damask rose, if indeed human hands were involved in its conception, or where in the world the first damask was found. Back thousands of years to attempt to answer these questions and comes up with some interesting suggestions of own. Apart from its status as number one perfume damask rose has been an important medicine in every major traditional system of medicine on Earth. The Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Indians, Chinese and Europeans all depended on the healing power of this beautiful plant. Several plants of Rosa grow wild in Central Asia and geographically as far Western Europe and Eastern Asia. Due to centuries of breeding, the original botanical relations with wild rose species are unclear.

Damask Rose blends are highly used as massage oil. It is diluted in baths and is also used as skin tonner. It stimulates and rejuvenates skin, moisturizes and hydrates all skin types.

Rose Water is often used to give a light, floral fragrance to Arabic and Iraq rice dishes which are reminiscent of Indian biryani. Long grain rice, meat (mutton, chicken), vegetables and seasonings (onion, cardamom, saffron, cinnamon, pepper and dried limes) are slowly cooked together until tender.  

 

Rose bark and rose petals make an astringent skin care wash that can help cleanse wounds and stop bleeding. Rosewater can be used on its own as a facial toner, and forms the basis for rose cold creams and facial lotions. A few drops of rose oil add depth, and an unmistakable fragrance to any skin care remedy. Both rose petals and rose hips can be used in herbal teas and as bath infusions, rose hips have the stronger flavor.
